Global Vacation Rental Sites You May Not Have Known About

The importance of vacation rental websites and marketplaces is growing. Every day, they attract millions of visitors looking for vacation lodging. Vacation rental sites are ideal for hosts who want to reach their target audience at the right time and place. So, if you want to increase the number of bookings, you should start by advertising your properties in places where your potential guests are. As a guest, you might want to find the best home away from home for your next vacation.

AirBnb
The name of this site is almost synonymous with short-term rentals these days, and its reputation as one of the best vacation rental sites is well deserved: Airbnb offers abundant listings in most popular travel destinations, and its site is cleanly designed and easy to use. Airbnb is the top trusted vacation rental site and one of the most recognizable vacation rental brands.

It has the largest community of vacation rental hosts. As one of the largest vacation rental companies, Airbnb offers over 6 million listings to guests in more than 100 000 cities and towns across 220 regions and countries around the world. For guests, it means a lot of options to choose from.

VRBO
Vacation Rentals by Owner, or Vrbo ‘ver-boh,’ is a reputable booking site based in Austin, Texas, with over 2 million listings. Vrbo is a successful online travel agency (OTA) owned by Expedia Group, which also owns CarRentals.com, Expedia.com, HomeAway, Hotels.com, Hotwire.com, Orbitz, Travelocity, and Trivago.

Hosts who list their properties on this vacation rental booking site will benefit not only from Vrbo’s robust search function and innovative tools, but will also have their rentals automatically listed worldwide on HomeAway for more exposure and with each targeting a diverse range of guests.

Booking.com
Booking.com has over 28 million properties listed on its platform, with over 1.5 million nights booked every day. Originally, the site was known as a hotel booking site, listing only hotel rooms and not vacation homes. However, as the number of vacation home rentals listed on Booking.com has increased significantly in recent years, they have entered the vacation rental game with a bang.
Booking.com lacks its own payment system. Instead, it allows hosts to select their preferred payment methods. Booking.com therefore charges hosts a 15% commission on each booking. Direct debit is used to deduct the costs from your account.

Booking.com does not charge any fees if a guest cancels a reservation. A guest, on the other hand, may receive a bill from a hotel or another property that they have booked.

If you need to cancel a Booking.com reservation, please contact the hotel or property directly to discuss your situation.

TripAdvisor
TripAdvisor, which was founded in 2000, is one of the oldest and best vacation rental websites. As a result, it has strong brand recognition, making it an excellent choice for listing your rentals.

TripAdvisor is another well-known comparison website. It has over 1 billion reviews on hotels, restaurants, vacation rentals, and tourist attractions. It also owns several of the best vacation rental websites for homeowners, such as FlipKey, VacationHomeRentals, and HouseTrip.

TripAdvisor charges a 3% booking commission. When you list your property on TripAdvisor, it will automatically appear on FlipKey. This means more exposure and visibility for your vacation rental.

Expedia
Expedia is one of the world’s largest online travel shopping platforms, offering secure booking options for hotels, flights, car rentals, cruise ships, and vacation packages.

In addition to vacation rentals, it provides a variety of accommodation types such as hotels, villas, motels, and guest houses. Users looking for vacation rentals can use the “sort by” functionality to narrow down their search results.

What is OTA?
An online travel agency (OTA) is a web-based marketplace that allows consumers to research and book travel products and services directly with travel suppliers, such as hotels, flights, cars, tours, cruises, activities, and more. OTAs are used by millions of travelers worldwide every day to plan leisure and business travel.

OTAs provide access to your potential guests in locations and volumes that you would find difficult to reach through your own marketing efforts. Furthermore, OTAs offer market insights and tools for attracting travelers, securing and processing bookings, communicating with guests, and managing reviews.

Why post on these channels (OTA)?
OTAs are becoming increasingly popular. In fact, travelers today use OTAs to compare leisure travel options 50% more than hotel websites. As a result, OTAs can be an important part of your distribution strategy.

Online marketing investments you don’t have to make

Every year OTAs spend millions of dollars attracting consumers from around the world to their online travel marketplaces. Their investment in on online and tv advertising, billboards and sponsorships, social media and other marketing channels helps hotels to engage hard-to-reach travelers they couldn’t afford to reach otherwise. OTAs give you a low risk opportunity to grow your business, especially if you have limited marketing funds.

Greater visibility for your own website
Evidence shows that being listed on an OTA can bring more traffic to your property’s own website, because consumers often use OTAs for their search before booking directly. This is known as “The Billboard Effect”.
According to a 2011 study of consumers’ online pre-purchase behavior, approximately 75% of people who made direct reservations with a major hotel brand visited an OTA website before booking directly with the hotel. Another report from 2017 found that the “Billboard Effect” still exists, as many people visit an OTA before booking directly.

Access to rich tools, analytics and insights
OTAs give you free access to market data, competitive insights, traveler preferences and tools that otherwise can be costly to acquire on your own. Most will offer easy-to-use analytics to help you better understand your year-over-year performance and how you compare to like properties in your market. Based on their data and the booking trends in their marketplace, they may make suggestions to help you improve your results and offer tips and resources to support your decision making.

Dedicated support teams
Many OTAs help their partners succeed by utilizing regionally based account teams. These individuals have in-depth market knowledge and can provide insight into regional trends as well as advice on tactics that will help drive business success. Support teams and help content are available to partners who have issues or concerns. Furthermore, most OTAs assist travelers when they encounter problems before, during, or after a trip.
In the previous years, nearly 80 million international visitors came to the United States for vacation. Canada and Mexico were the top two countries of origin, with Germany, France, and Japan also making the list. New York, Boston, Miami, Los Angeles, Chicago, San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Washington DC were among the most popular cities to visit.

Bookings from foreign guests increased 44% immediately following the initial announcement that the US would relax international travel restrictions to 33 countries beginning November 8 2021. According to a report released on Tuesday, the company has seen an increase in cross-border travel, with an increase in guests booking trips more than 3,000 miles away from home.

Many of these trips are to the United States, which “historically is the world’s largest inbound travel market,” according to Airbnb’s report. “As countries around the world begin to relax travel restrictions, we’ve seen a surge in interest in these countries.”

“We’re likely to see a surge of demand now, and possibly another surge around Christmas,” Harteveldt predicted. “I believe 2022 will be a year of steady, progressive business growth, with more people coming from abroad.”

Domestic bookings are also on the rise, with a 40% increase in bookings for Thanksgiving week alone as Americans look to spend time with family during the holidays despite increased national vaccination rates, according to the report.

As demand for travel rises, cumulative TSA checkpoint travel numbers are approaching those reported at this time last year, and are more than doubling those reported in 2020. Despite a drop in air travel at the end of the summer, Harteveldt said airlines are pleased with the advance bookings they’re receiving from international points of sale outside the United States.

The influx of international visitors is expected to provide a significant boost to local economies and industries such as tourism, retail, and hospitality, which suffered greatly during the pandemic. Global travelers are likely to bring an influx of spending ahead of the holiday season, according to Harteveldt, because international travelers tend to spend money in the neighborhood where they stay.
